Tonight is a special moment for ‘Walkable Princeton’! For the first time (hopefully the first of many times!) our team will be getting together with local residents and members of the community to discuss walkability. We will be at Clocktower Cabana in the central plaza of Princeton Shopping Center tonight, Tuesday July 8, from 7.00 pm. – 9.30 p.m. Look for our ‘Walkable Princeton’ sign with our logo on it. College Towns. What does that make you think of? A smallish town or city, with lots of young people, arts-y atmosphere, ivy-covered buildings, a vibrant downtown with eclectic bars, cafes and restaurants? Sounds pretty good! So what is the greatest College Town?? Obviously, we’d say ‘Princeton’!!! But we’re biased, right? The Paul Robeson Center for the Arts is located in Princeton, kitty-corner to the Princeton Public Library at the junction of Witherspoon St and Paul Robeson Pl. Obama has selected a new Secretary for Transportation to replace Ray LaHood, who is retiring. This time, the President has selected a Democrat, and it’s Anthony Foxx, Mayor of Charlotte, NC! Mr Foxx, pictured above, had his nomination confirmed last week by a rare unanimous vote of the Senate. At the age of 42, he has already got a law degree from NYU; practiced law in private practice, for the Department of Justice, and for the House Judiciary Committee; served on Charlotte City Council; and been elected Mayor of Charlotte. Ray LaHood, pictured above, is the guy who implemented President Obama’s push for increased motor vehicle efficiency. Since becoming Secretary for Transportation in 2009, he has also championed the rights of air passengers stuck on runways, and defended Obama’s strategy of investment in high-speed rail infrastructure.

Video Shows 3D Vision of Princeton Hospital Site Proposal

Developer AvalonBay recently posted this Youtube video, which shows the animation of their new site plan for apartments at the Princeton Hospital Site. The video imagines what it would be like to walk down Franklin Avenue, up Witherspoon Street, down the service drive between the existing medical offices building at 280 Witherspoon St and the apartments, and then around the piazza area where the lobby entrance will be. New images of the redesigned AvalonBay apartment complex, which is proposed for the former Princeton hospital site on Witherspoon Street, were presented last night to the Princeton Planning Board. The plan, which represents one of the largest new walkable housing developments in Princeton in recent years, features two apartment buildings and three townhouse buildingsUpdate: we now have a video showing a 3D walk-through of the site, which you can see here. Showtime For AvalonBay At Princeton Planning Board

Princeton Hospital moved to Plainsboro last year, ending a 100-year tenure in town. The old hospital complex on Witherspoon Street went dark, and has been left to slowly decay ever since. UMPCC, the organization which runs the hospital, had sold the site to developer AvalonBay Communities, Inc. AvalonBay runs over 170 apartment communities throughout the USA, including at Fox Run Drive in Plainsboro (pictured above). However, their plan for adding apartments in Princeton came unstuck in December of last year, when the Princeton Planning Board tossed out their site plan. Continue reading
