“How will the next governor make it easier and safer for residents of all ages and abilities to get around the state?” That is the key question for a candidate forum happening TONIGHT (Wednesday, April 30). Orgnized by planning non-profit ‘New Jersey Future‘, the forum aims to put the focus on what the gubernatorial candidates will do to help walking and biking in particular. Walking and biking have not got a lot of love in New Jersey in the past. Can these candidates offer anything better?
The 1-hour forum is happening on Zoom, moderated by Meishka Mitchell, the President and CEO of Emerald Cities Collaborative. It was organized by New Jersey Future, who invited all the gubernatorial candidates. The four candidates who are participating are:
- Steve Sweeney, former NJ Senate President
- Sean Spiller, New Jersey Education Association President and former Mayor of Montclair
- Steve Fulop, Mayor of Jersey City
- Ras Baraka, Mayor of Newark
Unfortunately, it seems that Mikie Sherrill and Josh Gottheimer, who are also running for governor, are not attending the forum.
The event is being held in partnership with the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, East Coast Greenway Alliance, the Trust for Public Land, and the Circuit Trails Coalition. All of these organizations, in addition to New Jersey Future, are working to help encourage walking, biking, and trail use.
‘Walkable Princeton’ will aim to bring readers a summary of the candidate forum after it happens!
